Incompetent Cervix Or Preterm Labor

Hi all, I am now 5 weeks pregnant, though in my last pregnancy I lost my baby at 25 weeks. The doctors then were not sure if it was due to incompetent cervix or preterm labor. I spoke to a few of them and some thought I had an IC, the rest thought if I had an IC, I shld have lost the baby earliar (usually betn 16-20 weeks). Now I'm really worried, I really feel like I need the stich, but I feel 'what if the doctor thinks I dont need one??' I really do not want to loose my child this time. Please I need help and advice. Has anyone else been in the same situation as me? I really want to get the stich to be on the safer side. I have a different doctor now. I am not going to the doc I had for my first pregnancy, Please let me know what I need to do. Thanks for all your help and answers.

I not sure what to tell you, but I do want to say that I'm sorry for the loss that you had to go through. If it were me and "some" of the docs thought that I might have an incompetent cervix I would definetly want to get the st_tch in the cervix done. If you feel that the risks are great than maybe you should talk it over with your dr., but for me if I felt that it could possibly save me from losing another baby, I would get it done. Good luck!

Hi there, I'm so sorry you lost your little baby. I lost mine at 22 weeks due to IC. With my second pregnancy, they did a wait and see approach, weekly u/s cervical measurements, because they were unsure if it was ptl or ic. They gave me the st_tch at 15 weeks after my cervix was consistently shortening each week. I ended up having a full term baby with that one. With this pregnancy, I got the st_tch automatically at 12.5 weeks and am now 38 weeks pregnant. IC is very hard to diagnose, but be pushy and at minimum insist on weekly u/s measurements, it's the very least they can do considering what you've been through. Also, I belong to a msn support group for Incompetent Cervix, and highly recommend you joining it, as there are a ton of women going through all the same things as you are and have been a tremendous support for me. don't hesitate to ask any questions, as this is my third IC pregnancy. Best Wishes!!! Lisa

I am sorry for your loss. I went into labor at 24 weeks. Quite frankly I think ptl and ic go hand in hand. I would rather be safe than sorry. Have the st_tch placed. I was 24 weeks and my case was clear IC but remember what kicks in he ptl is the fact that your cervix is opening from the weight of the baby so it stands to reason that you will have ptl with IC. I lost my son after a battle in the NICU. My doctor is placing my cerclage between 10 and 11 weeks before any shortening occurs. I am currently ttc. I always think its best to be treated for both IC and PTL. Its pretty much the chicken and egg theory on this one to me, they go hand in hand.

Blessedmom78...I had a misscarriage on feb 27..and am having a hard time coping with the lost of my baby. My next doc visit is in two weeks to find out what went wrong...I talk to the RN when I went to pick up pictures of my baby "Angel"..she told me that the doctor is leaning toward the IC. Will they be able to determine if infact that is what I have? I was worried that I wouldn't be able to have a baby in the future...but from your story..it's giving me hope. What is involve with the procedure? how painful is it? I would like to join the support group...I need all the support I can get right now...since my family lives in another country...and it's just me and my bf. How can I contact you?

melissaanna, I'm so so sorry for what you are going through. I can say from experience that only with time does the pain ease. I pray that you have a supportive family that you can lean on during this time. I'd be glad to email you, hopefully, I can help you to understand Incompetent Cervix a little bit. What is your email address?
