HI, I am sorry for your loss. I recently had a d&c in dec, and also in april of last year and march of 2001. You will be put under (at least thats what i had happen each time) I had slight cramping the night of and the next day, but it wasnt bad. Also, I had bleeding on and off for about a week. It will take a while for your period to return because you will not ovulate until your hcg levels reach 0. Usually most women start their period 4-6 weeks after your d&c, but it may take longer then that. i wish you the best of luck and hope this helped. kittie

I had a d&c last august and wasn't sure what to expect either. The hospital was wonderful and very caring, I'm lucky for that, I know. They gave me a mild sedative first thing in the morning when I arrived after checking in, and I felt fine - even though I have an aversion to taking drugs. The surgery itself was nothing as I was put out - and recovery was smooth. I went home two hours later feeling a bit tired, and sad, but ok. I didn't have much bleeding for the first few days, but then got heavier bleeding on day 6 - like a heavy period. It lasted for about a week, and I took iron pills to ensure my iron level was ok. I got my af 6 weeks exactly after the d&c, and it was normal. Overall, physically it was fine, but emotionally I was really upset. Just disappointment, you know? I am pregnant again for a third time - 8 weeks along and a bit scared - after 3 months of ttc (waited two months after d&c to try again). Anyways, best wishes and I'm sorry to hear about your loss. There are some wonderful women on this site to help you and we all have our experiences to help you out. ((hugs))

Hi Maggie. I am sorry you have to go through this. A D&C is kind of a simple process. They'll put you out so you won't feel anything and it will be over very quickly. Before he puts you out, he'll probably briefly explain the process and advise you of when you can try again. When you wake up, you might have some period type cramps. they'll give you some motrin or something for that if you want. I only had minimal bleeding which was gone by the time I left the hospital. They'll make you wait there for about a half hour to an hour or so before you can leave. If you are RH negative they will give you a shot. After a couple of weeks, I had some bleeding that lasted a half a day, followed by two or three days of brown staining. I was told that this is normal, but it is not considered a period. My regular period showed up after 7 full weeks. The D&C is the easy part. Emotionally I hope you have the love and support of those around you. Good luck and know that you are not alone.
