i have recently been diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy and have been treated with methotrexate. since then, my hcg levels have gone up. the next step is going to be surgery (hopefully it can still be avoided). i feel i don't have any information about the surgery itself. has anyone gone through it? how long was your stay in the hospital? how long were you out of work? was it painful? i look forward to hearing responses...thanks!

Hi shann! I had surgery in June for an ectopic and lost my left fallopian tube. Mine was done as an outpatient so I went in first thing that morning and went home about 2pm that same afternoon. I was very sore afterwards and could not sit or stand without help. I felt really good about 9 days after the surgery but was told not to lift anything over 10 pounds for 6 weeks. I can't really comment on losing work time because I work for the school system and we were out for the summer (thank goodness). Don't worry if you do have to have surgery - it's not the end of the world. I lost my left tube and still conceived 3 1/2 months later. I'm now 24 weeks! If you have any questions or just want to talk, don't hesitate to respond! Good Luck!!!!

hi pk, thanks so much for your response. i cant tell you how great it is to hear that you got pregnant so soon after surgery... congratulations! it really gives me hope. i've been very scared about not being able to conceive. im a teacher as well and am feeling very guilty in advance for possibly missing a lot of work in the next few weeks. hopefully it wont go to that point! thanks again! i'll keep you posted.

hi pk! well, things did not go so well. i had my 2nd injection of methotrexate on friday the 16th bc the hcg levels had not dropped as much as they hoped.. about 2 oclock that monring i woke up with severe pains, worse than anything i've ever felt. we went to the emergency room and i ended up having emergency surgery because an ultrasound showed internal bleeding. they ended up taking a liter of blood out of my abdomen during surgery. and the strangest thing was that the egg was actually implanted on my ovary, not in my tube. the doctor had been doing this for almost 30 years and had never seen it, only read about it. i ended up staying in the hospital for 2 nights, 3 days because i lost so much blood and my blood count was so low they were contemplating a transfusion. it didnt end up coming to that and we're just going to wait for my body to reproduce its own blood. its been a crazy road, but the good news is my ovary and tubes are in perfect condition! no damage from the surgery which is great! thanks for checking in!
