All, I was wodering if this has been prescribed to anyone. I recently had a natural miscarriage at 9 wks. I had my last dr. visit today and she said that my hcg levels were back to zero. She gave me a prescription to start taking after I get a positive pregnancy test next time. It is a pregesterone pill, (sorry I cannot read her handwriting, but I think is is something like...Prometnum??) She said that I need to take it until I am 11 weeks along. Anyone else have this situation or a similar situation. What does progesterone do anyway???? (I forgot to ask her)

Prometrium is a progesterone supplement. Progesterone is vital to maintaining a pregnancy. It helps to thicken the uterine lining. Normally, progesterone is produced by the corpus luteum(the shell left over from ovulation) until the placenta takes over at 11-13 weeks. It's fairly common to be prescribed a progesterone supplement when you have had previous losses. I had 3 losses and was prescribed progesterone just a few days after my BFP this time. I am now nearly 12 weeks along and everything is great so far. There are many many women who have had successful pregnancies after losses, with the help of progesterone supplements. With that question answered..I am very sorry for your loss. Will you be trying to conceive again once your doctor gives the go-ahead?

Hi Mama, I am so sorry for your recent loss. I had a miscarriage at 10 weeks over the summer. I took Prometrium then. I am now pg again and took it for the first 12 weeks into my pregnancy. My Dr told me it helps build a comfortable living environment for the baby. I guess it helps build the lining, I am not 100% sure on that. Once you get to 11 or 12 weeks, your placenta (I think) starts making it and takes over. I know there are a lot of women that take it. With my first pg my level was only 4 and they like to see it over 19. With my 2nd pg my level was 12 so I was put back on it. I did NOT take it before I got pg either time. I have taking prenatal vitamins since the first pg and have added an extra folic acid and b6. When do you have to ok to start ttc again.

Thank you for your replies Becky and Frances. It is very comforting to know that you girls had/are having healthy pregnancies after your losses. I am so scared it will happen again, but the doctor said that my first one was a blighted ovum and that my progesterone was low. She seemed positive that with this supplement that I will have a healthy pregnancy next time. As to answer your questions abut ttc again, she said I could start after my next period. Again, thanks for your replys... :)
