Unplanned Pregnancy At 39

My husband & I are happily married (no kids) and found out last week I'm pregnant. (6 weeks) I will be 40 yrs this summer. We have been unsure about having children, and this was an unplanned surprise. I am starting a new job in 2 weeks, and feeling overwhelmed, etc. about what to do. I want to give 110% to my new job, but afraid it will be difficult. Any advice/perspective would be helpful.

Congrats on your first baby. Children are such a blessing. I think you are going to do a wonderful job, everything will fall into place. Not too worry and again congrats!

Hey sunshine, I will be 40 in May and also am about 6 weeks. Also just started a new job... My question to you is: Do you want the pregnancy? If you and your husband have decided you plan to go ahead with it...any forthcoming challenges will seem less so. If this is your first, which it sounds like, you will have a lot of adjustments to make. However, in this day and age, it's a lot easier to find daycare, social networks, etc to give you that extra support. Being that you have gone 39 years without making the adjustment to parenthood...it may come as a shock to you to have to change many aspects of your life around. But the wonder of new life created by you will never cease to amaze you. You're not alone in your situation either. Many women don't have kids at all until their mid to late 30s. Personally, I am scared too....only because it's been 20 yrs since my daughter was born.....have I forgotten what to do? All the ha__sles etc? Also...as far as your job goes, there should be no real reason for you not to continue giving your job your all for most of the pregnancy. Many women work all away up until the very end. Good luck and let us know how it's going. Remember that where there is a will...there is a way.

sunshine- I know there are people out there that were totally ready for kids, but I never felt that way. With that said I love being a Mom. I had my first at 39 and am a career orientated person. Juggling work with a new baby is challenging, however it is totally doable. Just make sure to sign up now for a good daycare. It's also much easier if your husband helps out.

Sunshine, congrats...I know its a scary time right...alot of "unknowns". First, take the "age" factor out of it. I had my first child at 38yrs of age...For us, we knew I wanted to be a stay at home mom, but when I brought DS home I had major anxiety about whether or not it was going to work for me. About 2 weeks into it I found I loved it and loved being a MOM!!! I cannot even imagine my life w/out him. I discovered quickly how much joy he brought to me and how many times a day I truly SMILED...and felt real deep joy...just because of this little baby!!!. He is 4 and I am 42 yrs old now , Im expecting my 2nd in July. This time, Im not even nervous b/c I KNOW the joy they bring outweighs anything else. And you can be a success at your job too!! Find a working moms support group online...you'll get alot of good advice/tips/encouragement.. Best of luck to you. Its the best ride of your life!
