Question About AFP Testing

I had blood work done today... the AFP test, and I have heard some horrible things about this test... can you girls tell me how many of you had the test come back positive and then found out nothing was wrong? I am a nervous wreck about this test... I will die if it comes back positive!

I've heard that it has a 50% rate of false positive but I don't know how true that is. I know one person that it has happened to personally. Why would you die if I came back positive? No biggie babe, God never gives you more than you can handle.

I didn't mean if would die if something was wrong with my baby, I just meant that I would be really nervous about the outcome seeing as how I have heard that the test is really inaccurate... and it doesn't even diagnois.. I would still be nervous though, because I worry about everything.. I know I would still love my baby even if it had down's or any other type of deffect.. it just makes me nervous to think about...

For that reason I declined the test. It didn't matter to me what possible defect there could be, it's my baby and I'll deal with it. But really just try to take the test as it's meant: an approximation. It can't tell you for sure so don't try to make it mean more than it really does. I know it's tough, but it will probably come back clear.

mom-to-be, i totally understand what your feeling! no need to defend what your thoughts are. it is a very scary test. i go tomorrow and i am so worried also. its not about "dying" for you....its about a dream and a vision of your child that you had "dying". i agree with shoppingfor two though.....god wont give us anything we cannot handle. good luck to you. i know all will be ok. how long does it take to get the results anyhow??

my doctor told me that the results should be in within a few days... so I am thinking around 2.. will he call me with results either way? or just call me if something comes back positive?

Hey there! To be honest everyone worries whether they say they dont or not. The test many times can be a false positive. They do the test based on every other pregnant woman with the same height, weight, weeks in pgy ect. If they mess up on just one of those you are likely to get a false positive. Besides it is just a number anyways. I would never abort my baby but I had the test anyways because if it came back positive I would want to be prepared. People make too much of the blood test honest. It just tells you one way or another. Now if you were electing to have the Amino done then that is a different story as it carries a risk of m/c. I know what you meant by you would die if it came back positve because I would have too. Having a downs baby or a baby with spina bifida is a heart breaking thing to any expectant couple no matter what they tell you. If you are under, I think it is 35, do not smoke or drink and have no family history of it in your family then your odds are already lower. As far as if you should call them back or not, I waited to see my doctor in person before I asked for the results but it is up to you! GL hun and keep your chin up!!

This is my 4th pregnancy - and I have had the test done each time. I just had it done yesterday for the 4th time. This test is just a simple screening, not a diagnostic test, that measures certain proteins in your blood, which can be increased for several reasons (age being a big factor). If you do get a positive result, it is NOT an positive indicator that something is definitely wrong. I am over 35 this time, pregnant with twins and most likely it will come positive. The tech told me that they often have a high false-positive rate, especially as your age increases. No worries though, your mid-point u/s is the test that you should be most concerned with. There is where they can actually see how your baby is developing and pinpoint most defects. I know it is hard, but try not worry. All should be fine. :-)

I had had the test the same time as my NT and it came back negative but my age at 37 knocked my odds on the overall combined test.

I had this test done with my first pregnancy and it came back positive -- but had an amnio and everything was just fine -- I had a beautiful healthy baby girl. Have another friend who also got a false positive -- everything was perfect with her baby girl.

My cousin had this test done when she was preg years ago. Her baby is now 16 and perfect! Well, besides the fact that she is 16! LOL. I just took that test as well. I understand, but don't count your chickens before they hatch! You will be fine and so will the baby. Keep us posted.
