Special 20 Week Visit

Does anyone know if the doctor does a special sono at 20 weeks? I have an appointment for 18 weeks and 22 weeks, but a close friend told me that the doc usually measures the baby during a sono at 20 weeks because it is a milestone for development for the baby. I had my last child 8 years ago and cannot remember. I just want to know so that I can rearrange my doc appointments. Thanks.

20 weeks is the standard time but I have had scans earlier and later than 20 weeks. It is just an average time. The 20 week scan usually checks the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, stomach, general growth as well as the general well-being of the baby. Different Doctors may check for other things too but I don't see any reason the change the appointments you have.

Hi, your 20wk u/s should be given out from a different department, so shouldnt interfere with your normal 4 weekly antenatal appointments, so changing your doc appointments shouldnt make a difference, although you should ask them about your 20week anomaly scan, i got one at almost 20wks and the baby wasnt lying ina good position to see everything so I had to go back at week 23! Goodluck

Ok. Thanks. Why is this sono not done by the office? My doctors sono tech will not do it herself?

hmm...maybe I am wrong, im from UK so perhaps its is a little different here, I have combined care so I see my midwife at the docs surgery every 4weeks and all u/s are done at the local hospital. So you will probably get the sono done at your 18 or 22week doc apps, you should get it done at your 22 week as the bigger the baby the more detailed it can be!

I was going to get my 20 week ultrasound at 17 1/2 because it fit with my 4 week appointment. Just around 20 weeks is a good time because everything is pretty much where it should be.

Oh and it is a lot more detailed which might be why someone else has to do it.

If your OB office has a trained sonographer, he/she will be the one doing the 20 weeks scan. Although it's called the 20 weeks scan, it can be done before or after 20 weeks, and most of the time, your OB will schedule it with the sonographer to coincide with your regular appointment.
