Hi ladies... I have a question. I have a home doppler and am recently able to pick up the babies heartbeat. I am just nervous that I am going to hurt the baby with the doppler. Does anyone have any ideas of how often it is safe to check the heartbeat? how about any side effects that will hurt the baby? Any advice will help. thanks ladies...

The tech who did my ultrasound said that those are safe as long as they're used for short periods of time and not too often. I try to use mine for less than 30 seconds at a time and only 2-3 times a week max. There's some controvery about the safety of these since it's been shown that ultrasound can heat up tissues from animals. It doesn't seem to heat up tissues of grown people, but there's not really any testing on babies. They think it's safe, but don't know for sure. Her concern is with people who use it all of the time and for minutes on end.

I have heard the smae thing you shoudl only use it 2-3 times per week and for a short time. I am not sure what the side effects are or if there are any but I wouldnt want to take any chances. I know how anxiouse you can be to hear the babys heart beat, but I just decided that for me presonally I would want ot lister all of the time so I decided not to get one. Good Luck!

I used my home doppler 4 or 5 times a day for 2 months straight....no more than 20 seconds each time. I just had my US last week, and have a 30 minute 4D ultrasound planned for july

My doctor said they were safe. I used mine a few times a week, but only long enough to hear the heartbeat and check the bpm.
