How accurate are blood tests?

Blood tests can detect a pregnancy earlier than a home pregnancy test (about 7-12 days from possible conception) and are more accurate than a HPT.

When a fertilized egg implants into your uterus your body starts to produce the hormone hcg. The blood test measures that number, so it's not like a pregnancy test were you get a positive or a negative. It does not take long for your body to start producing these hormones and i think a number over 5 is considered pregnant. Your doctor might order another test a few days later to make sure the number is rising. Hcg numbers double every few days in a healthy pregnancy. I guess the reality is that nothing is 100% but a blood test is probably about 99.9% accurate.
