35wks Can Feel Baby S Head Inside Me

I was checking to see what my cervix felt like and noticed (shocked) that it was pulled up more now, very soft/squishy and there is a hole I could easily put a finger into but I was too scared.. didnt want to do anything that might have hurt my bub! But the most amazing thing was (never knew this was possible) I could feel my baby's head around the cervix on either side. It's round hard bone just sitting there, I was in complete shock thinking "can that be? What the heck is that?". After doing research on the net I found out that it's your baby's head, and that you can feel it doing an internal! :) Another question I have for you girls is what could be the go with my cervix!? It feels shorter and it's definately open! I am 35wks with my first child and when I saw the midwife a few days ago she was a bit surprised how engaged my bub is, he is extremely low in my pelvis. Do first time pregnant mums efface/dilate weeks prior to birth or something, or could this mean I may not be all that far off labour? Thanks xo

ps - the midwives/Dr's at my hospital dont do internal checks on effacement/dilation until you are in labour if everything is progressing normally in your pregnancy.

Just so you know, I got scolded by my Doctor for feeling my cervix. He said that during pregnancy DO NOT DO THAT as it can cause an infection. I didnt know that you could feel the babies head though!! Makes me wanna go against my doctor. I wont of course but dosent mean I dont wanna. haha OH and also I thought I was dialted and I am only 27 weeks. I called him to ask him and that is when I got the scolding. haha I went to L&D and they said I wasnt at all. :)

Whats the difference in having s_x and puttting your (clean) fingers up there? Just wondering :)

Nurs2b21 - November 23

How in the world do you feel that far up? also...is it not bad to have s_x if you are dilating...I keep thinking about what if sperm get up in there...I mean if you can feel the baby's head can't stuff get up in there??

jennifer_33106 - November 23

I dunno. haha good question. I just do what I am told. haha Also what Nurs2b21 said makes me think also... I thought that the mucos plug was supposed to "plug" everything up and make it hard for anything to penetrate or get inside....

I dont see how checking could be bad, it's the same as having s_x, so long as everything is hygenic I cant see a problem being caused. Ofcourse I would never go sticking my finger into the cervix like the Dr's do to determine how far dilated etc you are. I am waay to chicken to attempt that, I would hate to do anything that might hurt my little one. But yeah on either side of the cervix you can feel hard round bone, the head! :) It's quite cool! I have always been able to reach my cervix, it's not that far up - about a finger length.. I suppose it varies with every woman though?

That was my exact thought! How can you get your fingers up that far? I don't think I can, nor will I attempt it. haha. That's really cool though.

As far as having s_x while dilating, it's safe as long as your bag of waters hasn't ruptured...that's what keeps baby safe from infection.

If you can feel your cervix easily at this stage it means it is moving down and becoming 'anterior' signalling labour is approaching but not necessarily today! More to the point is it soft or firm? Soft feels like your lips, firm the tip of your nose. Your cervix is usually 'posterior' and right to the back during pregnancy which is why it is often difficult for even Doctors to check if it is early on in the pregnancy - I know when I was having problems with two of my pregnancies at around 29 weeks they had me put my fists under my b___t in order to tilt my pelvis. As a rule of thump if the head is engaged you have 3-4 weeks before labour will start. With my first the head engaged at 29w4d and I delivered him at 33w5d. It isn't an exact science though! I was als 6cms dilated and my waters ahd gone byt he time I got to the hospital and other than for a st_tch in my side I didn't know I was in labour with him so it is definitely possible to dialte and efface and not be aware of it - first time mum or not. Are you in the UK? Just wondering with you saying about not getting checked unless there is a problem or you are in labour.

I am in Australia. My lo has been low in the pelvis since wk21, lately the midwife has written on my chart as being 4/5 engaged. But at my last appointment the Dr had me at 5/5 engaged, suppose it differs slightly with every person checking you perhaps. In any case my cervix is extremely squishy/soft (like your lips) and low down and it does feel open to me, not like it was before, it definately has a decent hole in it! But as I said I don't want to prod around and see how many finger tips wide that hole actually is.. I have been getting daily cramps/stabbing pains in my groin area lately (head pressing down I was told by Midwife) and last night I was in so much pain with braxton hick contractions, I almost thought I was in labour. They were all across the top of my fundus, then they become all over my stomach and all day I have been getting mild menstrual like cramps/pinches around my pelvis region. I know my body is getting ready for labour - all these symptoms on top of developing nausea which is coming and going 24/7 must be a decent signal that my body is preparing right? I guess it's just interesting to see how long before labour arrives, I couldn't imagine being like this for another 4-5wks. I just have this feeling I'll see my little man soon, perhaps 2-3wks away... I know it sounds strange but I have also had this funny thought since day dot of my pregnancy that I wouldnt go to the full 40wks. I am perfectly healthy and the pregnancy has gone extremely well - expect some anaemia which corrected itself last I was tested at 30wks or something. Get another blood test this coming week to check on that. This is my first child by the way. :)

whatsgoingon, In my opinion (and I am no professional by any means lol) I dont think you will make it to 40 weeks it sounds to me like things are going pretty fast for you. I know with my ds I dilated and effaced pretty early and I delivered a day shy of 37 weeks. My water broke but I never had any contractions until they gave me pitocin. I would just pay close attention to everything and keep in contact with you doctor or midwife. Good Luck I hope you have a fast delivery adn a very healthy little one :)

I had the same question as fall. I certainly don't wash my DH's p___s before every time we have s_x, but if I were going to stick my fingers up there, I would definitely wash them first, so I don't see how it could cause infection. But as for your dialation and effacement, my SIL was 5cm for 4 weeks!! But I think if you are fully effaced, that is a good sign that you'll go early!
