Hi ladies! I was reading your thread on gestational diabetes. i also have to go back in Monday for the 3 hour test and I have also have myself in jolts about it ( part of my personality I assume) Anyhow, I was just wondering Alli if you could share what your diet looks like with us after you went to the dietician...? I would really be interested in hearing what it is I should and should not be eating. Of course, I cut out the sweets ( which is quite hard) but what about pretzels, bread, etc?

I just went to the dietician this week. I like you was freaking out and and still struggling and frustrated about having GD. But, It will be for 10 weeks, and this is how I am trying to get through it. They have me watching my serving sizes of carbs. This I found out is very hard, everthing has carbs in it, breads, fruits, pastas. Each serving of carbs is considered 15g. I am only allowed 2 servings for breakfast, a serving between breakfast and lunch, 3 servings for lunch, a serving for the afternoon, 3 servings for dinner, and 1 serving at night before bed. This is tough. I have to work milk into my meal. So this basically limits what you can use your carbs on throughout the day. You still need carbs, so you can't cut them out completely. So for me, it is do I want a gla__s of milk or some pretzels...I choose the milk since it is better for the baby. Try to stay away from white bread, wheat bread is better. They also have low carb bread, which you can have 2 slices of instead of one. My bedtime snack is 2 pieces of low carb bread with peanut b___ter. They want me to have a carb and a protein. THe protein helps your sugar levels from spiking. If you cut carbs completely, your body can start producing Ketones, which are harmful for the baby. Its when your body can't produce enough insulin to break down the glucose/carbs in your system and starts using muscle tissue. Please try not to worry to much. Just try and realize that you have a team of doctors that are out there to help you avoid more serious problems if you do have GD. You may not have it, or you may not. If you do, diet may help you. You just have to watch the sugars and test your blood four times a day. Let me know how you make out and I can help you with more info from there. i also know that you have to cut back on breads so i guess that would include pretzels. They say that wheat is better than white bread even though we still need carbs.

Hello Everyone - May 27

I went to take my sugar test two weeks ago. Today I received a call that I had to go to take it again since it seems I have GD. This has me very worried, since my mom has it there is a possibility I have it too. Since they test you when you are 27-28 weeks pregnant, will if affect your baby by then if you didn't know you had it?

Alli - May 29

No, I won't affect your baby. GD doesn't generally appear until around 24 weeks. I am now 32 weeks, and they will have you go to the doctors more and monitor you more closely. If you can keep your blood sugars controlled, the baby will be fine. My doctor told me then when you don't listen and do what they ask is when you can have problems. I had to go on insulin injections this week, and honestly, I am fine with this. After my int_tial 3 hr test when I found out, I can tell you I was a spaztic mess. Now that I have learned more, adjusted my diet, and calmed down, I am fine. I don't like giving myself shots, but if it is what I have to do to make sure my little boy and I are healthy, then I am okay with that. He looked great on my ultrasound and weighs 4 lbs 2 oz, and I will do anything in the world to keep him healthy.

hey - May 29

There is alot of Sugar free snacks that is good. Try them!! Good Luck!!

Alli - May 30

Sugar Free doesn't mean carb free. The carbs are what you have to look for! Just because it is sugar free doesn't mean you can eat all you want. Sugar Free Fudgesicles have 21 carbs per bar. This will convert to glucose in your system and raise your blood sugar. So you have to count these in as well.

Hello everyone..... Im 33 years old and the mother of 3 very healthy children..... now i'm pregnant with my 4th child and im due on August 26th, but I will be having her a week early because she is a repeat c~section and because im on blood thinner. I just found out the other day that I have gestational diabetes ( 1st time ever ) I am so scared it's been driving me crazy. I go to see the diabetes nurse tomorrow and to see the dietician on friday. In the mean time I have cut back on sugar and been trying very hard to cut back on carbs...... It's very hard because i'm a juice drinker and I love all fruits..... breads, rice, pasta, potatoes....I know this is a stupid question but do you totally have to cut out all of the things I listed above? Especially the fruit?..... I was told that with gestational diabetes you tend to give birth to large babies. Is that true? I have had lage babies to begin with... My 1st child was 8lbs 3oz..... My 2nd child was 9 lbs even and the 3rd child was 10 lbs 5oz........Now im scared this baby will be over 11 lbs. How can you prevent this from happening? If anyone has any tips and pointers about gestational diabetes, I would love to hear them. Thank You :O)

HI ALLISON - June 2

I'AM SURE BY NOW YOU HAVE WENT TO GO SEE THE DIETICIAN .HOPE EVERYTHING WAS WELL.ANYWAY SORRY TO SAY BUT YEAH WE TEND TO HAVE LARGER BABIES THAT IT WHY YES WE DO HAVE TO MONITOR OUR CARBS AND DEFINETLY JUICES.BY US HAVING DIABETES WE ARE CONSIDERED HIGH RISK SO YOUR DOCTOR SHOULD BE GIVING YOU MORE ULTRASOUNDS TO WATCH THE GROWTH OF THE BABY.I 'AM BARELY GOING TO SEE A DIETICIAN TODAY AND IT HAS BEEN 4 WEEKS SICNE I FOUND OUT AND I'HAVE LEFFT ALL SUGARS ALONE.YOU HAVE TO EVEN MONITOR THE FRUITS THAT YOU EAT,ACCORDING TO MY DOC YOU WILL NEED TO EAT 3 MEALS AND 3 SNACKS AT THE SAME TIME DAILY AND WHEN YOU DO EAT FRUIT IT SHOULDN'T BE BY ITSELF SO TRY TO EAT IT WITHA MEAL.ANYWAY SINCE I HAVE NOT SEEN A DIETICIAN YET I DONT KNOW MUCH TO TELL YOU BUT TRY NOT TO WORRY YOURSELF LIKE I HAVE AND THAT EVERYTHING WILL BE ALRIGHT.NINI
