Estimated Baby Weight Big Baby

Hi all... I have just under 4 weeks left. But at my 36 week appt., the midwife estimated that the baby is already 6.5 -7 lbs. Does this sound big? Don't babies gain like 1/2 lb. each week at the end? This is my first and neither my husband nor I are big in frame. So I was a little startled that I might be having a big baby. What do you think?

If that estimate is true....then yes that could be a bit big, but the thing is (and this is coming fron my doctors mouth).....its really, really hard to estimate the size of a baby whether it is through Ultrasound or measurement in some other way. I really would not be overly concerned b/c everyone I've talked to has had their estimates way off. One of my good friends that just had a baby was told through ultrasound and measurement that she was going to have a average size baby (7.5lbs)....her baby came out over 9 pounds. I really would not worry.

Like Jenn2 said, it is really just an estimate and it could be way off or it could be close. At my 37wk appt they said my baby was already 7lbs(not due for 2 wks) and will probably come out weighing about 8-8.5,which is nothing for me b/c I have big babies anyway and neither my husband nor myself were big in frame either.Don't worry too much about it as long as you're both healthy.Good Luck.

It is just hard to say... My friend ( a tiny little gal) was told that her baby would be very large. She ended up weighing 7 pounds 13 ounces. I have read about many similar cases, too. Most of the time it isn't a problem- even if the baby is on the big side, because your body knows what it can handle. If your baby is too big for your body, it will probably just come a little early.Try not to worry!

Thanks girls for your words of wisdom. I've decided that as long as the baby is healthy, I'm not going to worry it! Hopefully I'll go a little early. :)

I had an ultrasound at 40wks exactly...they estimated my baby to weigh 8lbs 9oz at that point...I had her 5 days later...and she weighed 8lbs 2oz. So dont worry too much. I was thinking I was going to have a well over 9 pounder!
