Fifths Palpable

Hi, at my 30 week appointment my midwife told me I was 5/5 palpable I understand this means, she can feel all 5/5 of baby's head and therefore its not engaged at all. I was wondering as we are all at different stages how many fifths palpable are you other girls, how quickly does it go down for example if you are 1/5 does this mean you are going to go into labout really soon?

Sorry GG...I have never heard of that...I'll ask my Md next Thursday what that means/is

This is the same thing as the stations of engagement. It starts at -5, which is where you are, 0 station means you are fully engaged, and +5 means the baby is crowning. Knowing the station you are at is not enough to know when you will go into labor. It's a combination of dilation, effacement and the station of the baby. I went for my 37 week appt on Monday and I was 1cm dilated, 75% effaced and the baby was at -3. So I'm getting close.

When do they start doing that test? I have never heard of it and I am still confused. How do they feel the babies head?

Usually they will feel the outside of your belly to get an idea of the baby's position (head up/down). If they pinch the bottom of your belly right above your pubic bone, they are feeling for the baby's head. Once you start getting internal exams, mine started at 36 wks) they will feel for baby's head from the inside. And if baby is high, ouch!!, they will go reaching! I don't think they are really concerned with positioning and engagement until your last month.

Oh so that is what my doctor was doing at my last appt. He checked for the babies position and told me she was heads down but could still move. I learn something new everyday. haha thanks!

Jennifer, your doctor probably wasn't checking for the baby's station, but just trying to decide if it's head down, transverse (side lying) or head up (breech). When the doctor said it could still move, they were probably talking about the possibility it could go into the breech position before delivery, especially if you're less than around 37 weeks, but hopefully it stays head down. Like Brendansmom said, they won't check for station until much closer to delivery. And Gemini_Girl, that would make sense that you're 5/5 or -5 right now, since you're only 30 weeks along. It could be a problem if your baby was starting to engage this soon, so that's a good thing to not be engaged yet. I got checked just shy of 36 weeks and was 1-1/2 cm dilated and 25% effaced, but the doctor didn't check for station. Hopefully she will at my next appt. I'm 37 weeks now.

The first time they checked me for this I was 36 weeks and the baby was at -2. I was checked today and now he is at 0 station, I am 39 weeks 3 days, and still not in labor.
