Preterm Contractions

I was taking my normal NST last night when the nurses came in quite concerned about my contractions every 5 minutes. Who knew? I wasn't aware of all of my contractions. Anyway, has anyone been diagnosed with preterm contractions and delivered around their stated times? I am also 50% effaced. That could be from the contractions or it could just be that I'm 35 weeks. Anyone been this much effaced and gone to full term? My fetal fibronectin test was negative. I declined the medication "to stop" the contractions because there is too much variability among clinicians about whether it really helps or not.

I might be a bad example considering my first was born at 32 weeks very unexpectedly, but with this pregnancy I had contractions that were measurable on the monitors, but unnoticible to me, every 6 minutes during a recent trip to L&D. I went there initially because I was spotting bright red, and during all the testing they discovered the contractions. I got two shots of terbutline and went home after about four hours. It might have been due to dehydration, who knows. All I know is I've been guzzling water ever since. I don't appear to be effaced, in fact my cervical length is an extremely healthy 5 cm (anything over about 1-1/2 cm at this point is fine), or at least I a__sume that means I'm not effaced at all. I'm almost 30 weeks along right now. During an NST a few days after that trip to L&D, they detected a couple other minor contractions and said I have an "irritable uterus" from some wavy lines they got on the report. Hopefully this isn't indicating I'll go early again. I'm hoping all this is normal for me, and we're just catching it because of how closely my doctors are watching me considering my early delivery before.

Also, I've had all negative fetal fibronectins too. I started getting them every two weeks about two months ago.

I have read that when you are 50% effaced, labor is right around the corner. I don't know if you might find it good or bad, but you will go before your due date. Your cervix is almost completely effaced.

Countrymom, I actually went into preterm labor at 34w4d and dilated to 2cm 70% effaced and was given medication to stop the contractions. Well, needless to say, I am 39w5d right now and my little one is still in there! I did not think there was any way I could make it to my due date with the preterm labor scare, but somehow it has worked out :) So it is very possible to make it to full term even while being dilated and effaced. I have been at 2 cm 70% effaced for nearly 6 weeks now! Good Luck!
