When Will I Have This Baby

I just need to know what you ladies think. At my 37 week checkup I was dilated to 2.5 cm and 60% effaced. then at my 38 week checkup I was dilated to 3 cm and 80% effaced. I not due until Dec. 3, but am curious if anyone has any idea how much longer it will be. Also, what exactly do those numbers mean? This is my second baby and with my first nobody ever mentioned anything about effacement.

At my 36 week appointment, I was 2cm dilated and 70% effaced. I go in for another appointment tomorrow and hope for more good news. My doc told me (at last appointment) that he doubted I would make it to my due date which is Dec. 10. Of course no one can say for certain when any of us will go, but you are definitely progressing and things are happening down there! I wouldn't think you would go past your dd, but I'm not a doctor. What did your doc say? Did you ask him?

at my 37 week appt. he said it could be any day. I was surprised that I even made it through the next week. Then he said the same thing at 38 weeks. What I find interesting is that I don't think I'm having as many BH contractions as I was having a few weeks ago. I do think I lost my mucus plug this weekend.

Effacement is where the neck of the cervix shortens. Picture a two liter pop bottle upside down - at first the cervic is long and narrow. As you "efface" it becomes shorter and wider. I guess effacement is what takes the longest for a first time mom, since the cervix hasn't done this before. Dialation is what happens as the cervix gets shorter and opens more, but unless the cervix is shorter, it can't dialate, i.e., open wider. Does that make a kind of sense? I think this is what you were asking! ;)
